Since 2009 Rei Kawakubo has kept a long-running Comme des Garçons line in conversation with the Beatles, less a single drop than an ongoing graphic project. The Apple emblem, the Union Jack, and lyric fragments recur across tees, cardigans, and bags sold through Dover Street Market. A three-year Apple Corps license; per Paul McCartney's stipulation, no leather.
THE CONCEPT
Polka dots, apples, and no leather
No nostalgia play: Kawakubo's polka dots collide with the Apple Corps logo, silhouettes stand in for faces. And at Paul McCartney's request there's no leather anywhere, the bags are embossed polyurethane and printed PVC.
